NextBillion.net is an interesting an organization dedicated to helping the “next billion” — the next billion poor people rise from the base of the economic pyramid (BOP) as participants in healthy economies, see and the next billion in profits for businesses, generic from multinational to microenterprises, to earn by selling to underserved markets.
They describe themselves as “NextBillion.net brings together the community of business leaders, social entrepreneurs, NGOs, policy makers, and academics who want to explore the connection between development and enterprise.”
This site has many interesting stories of how poverty is being defeated through enterprise.
NextBillion.net is a project of World Resources Inc, an environmental think tank … what an interesting association!
I am fascinated by this website, as I both work in finance, and am interested in social justice. That is an interesting association for sure. To me, globalization is at least somewhat working against the environmental movement, both key issues of our time. What happens when more people cross the poverty line, and want to possibly emulate a Western, overly consumerist lifestyle, thus greatly speeding up the already crazy environmental degradation of our planet? Without a doubt, more people on the planet have to get beyond mere survival and I applaud any actions that assist people in getting past that barrier. And not that I would want to stop them or control those actions, as that would be quite the elitist thing to do. I will continue to follow the ideas on your website. Thank you, you’ve made me think.
